‘Canvas is the form, the medium and foundation of what I do. I use it in an unconventional but in some ways traditional way.’
Much more recently, Speller has used the back of her old paintings and she now stretches, sizes and experiments with fresh canvas applying paint with playing cards, rarely with a paintbrush. ‘I remove this from the stretcher and cut into pieces, and then immerse them into oil and household paint.’
Another approach has been in the form of collage on card. This leads to a neater finish and the result is reminiscent of rock or ice features or labyrynthine shapes. See Recent Work.
